Testimonial

“Today the Plano Area Alliance of Black School Educators Board had our annual summer retreat at the the Plano African American Museum. I grew up going to the “east side” with Cylinda Gamble and Tanya Cummings-Lee, but never knew the history behind the community. When I tell you I was brought to tears as I read the names on the slave registry of this plantation in Plano, and to stand in a home that was purchased over 100 years ago, by recently freed slaves…. To know the blood, sweat and tears our ancestors shed on that very land was indescribable.

As we read the last line of the PAABSE litany, I cried again. As the two ladies who run the museum showed us their elementary yearbook picture in the Plano Colored School, and told their own stories going through desegregation in Plano in 1964, I stood in awe at the perseverance and fortitude that makes up this community.

This moment demonstrated why the work of Texas Alliance of Black School Educators and Plano Area Alliance of Black School Educators are so important. I would like to think our ancestors where present and shining down as we sat at this table and laid plans that will impact students and our next generation. #OurAncestorsWildestDreams #PAABSESupports” – Ashley Washington
